Shearers

Our Shearers

When we hear talk of pieces of the farming world slipping away, the hard job of shearing is rarely mentioned. Shearing is a grueling test of strength and stamina—one that often goes unseen and unappreciated. Yet without skilled shearers, farmers have no way to harvest fiber from their livestock. This craft is as essential as it is demanding, and its loss would unravel a vital link in the chain that sustains our fibershed.

Shearing is not just about removing fleece; it is an art that requires precision and care. Each shearer brings their unique touch to the process, ensuring that every sheep is treated with respect and compassion. By valuing this craft, we honor the bond between shearer and sheep.

After her haircut, this sheep is cool and greatly relieved. Under the gentle hand of a skilled shearer, the stress of the haircut lasts only a few minutes, but the health benefits last a year.

This neglected sheep is desperately in need of shearing and faces serious risks. Beyond the discomfort of its heavy wool, it is vulnerable to fly strike, where maggots can infest and consume its flesh, leading to a tragic fate.
